Have you ever wondered why the Bavarians started celebrating the Oktoberfest? It all began on October 12, 1810, when all Bavarians were invited to celebrate the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, later known as King Louis I, to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The celebrations lasted for five days and ended with a horse race on a large meadow, which later was named TheresienWIESE. The following year, the celebration was repeated and combined with a state agricultural fair. By 1818, booths were serving traditional food and drinks. Except for years affected by war or global pandemics, the Oktoberfest has been celebrated every year since.
